Columbine (Aquilega)

Columbine is one of my favorite super-low maintenance plants. They easily self seed, but are also perennial. They are at home in a shady woodland type setting, but can handle a wide range of sun/shade conditions.

The majority of my Columbine plants are from the ones I grew from seed over 10 years ago. They are mostly yellow (not my favorite) and a red/yellow mix ones. I wouldn’t go out of my way to add yellow flowers to my garden, but at this point, I am kind of attached to them, being as they were some of the first perennials I grew from seed.

Working at a greenhouse, I also added a few to my collection at that time. So as I dig all my plants up to keep them safe while our living situation is up in the air, I am documenting them here. I hope to have a better idea on their mature size and colors (with the seedlings, I won’t know the color unless it blooms in the pot) to put them in a better placement in the future. I also hope to inspire you to add some columbine to your own garden.

This is just going to be a super quick post. In the comments, add in any different columbines you like to grow, as well as any tips or tricks to growing these wonderful plants.

This is one I grew from seed many years ago getting ready to flower.
This is a favorite. I hope to find some more similar ones to add in the future.
a collection of my seedlings I have saved from the garden we may have to leave behind.
This one is Alpine Columbine (Aquilega alpina)… Turns out it is native to the Swiss Alps, just like my great grandpa.

Welcome to my little corner of the internet, mostly about plants in my Zone 3/4 garden in Alberta, Canada. I also dabble in many different crafty pursuits although I haven’t documented them on here very well for many years.
