I wanted to pop in with a quick mostly photo update of what has been happening around here in June (while it is still June). Everything is still in pots while we are working out some details. We have also been under water restrictions with ZERO outdoor water use allowed because of the water main break in Calgary. Luckily it has actually been raining this year, so everything has been kept ticking along with that and water I save from my son’s baths. If you have some decent DIY water barrel situations, please share them, because after this, and 2-3 years of drought, I foresee needing to save the water for the garden on a much more regular basis going forward.
Penstemon. This one was a random rescue so I didn’t know what colour it would be. Super pleased with the blue flowers.Alpine Columbine also blooming. I think she enjoyed being moved into some good potting soil and out of the sad spot she was in.The only remaining seedpod from the snakes head frittilaria that I wanted to save seed from… Toddlers are rough on gardens, but he can’t reach this one.Pasque flower well on the way to producing some seed as well. These ones don’t seem to be as attractive to a 20 month old to rip off as others.Getting to see some iris bloom after I mixed them all up and forgot which were which. I’ve had the classic white and purple ones since I was 12, when we moved to the country and they were planted there. A case of “I was going to save seed from these green onion flowers to send to my friend, but my baby ripped them off before they could even flower”. He also got all the chives he could reach too.Lungwort flowers. I found these for $2/plant last year and they only needed some water. Everytime I look at them, it reminds me that I should go to homedepot to check the clearance rack again soon.Lily of the Valley. I love this one, and it reminds me of my grandma. They smell so heavenly. Even better in a pot, because you can pick the pot up to smell them, and you don’t need to have your nose 5 inches away from the ground to enjoy them. Plus this keeps them in check as well.Woodland forget-me-nots. I’ve got a few different clumps of these now, after dividing when I moved everything into pots. I’m excited to get them more established because these tiny cheery blue flowers are a favorite of mine.Last but not least.. Blackberry flowers. Hopefully something happens with them, but i’m not holding my breath, just crossing my fingers. It feels like a win to just have blackberries survive in my yard. Which might seem crazy if you are from somewhere warm, where they grow abundantly, but that is not here.
Welcome to my little corner of the internet, mostly about plants in my Zone 3/4 garden in Alberta, Canada. I also dabble in many different crafty pursuits although I haven’t documented them on here very well for many years.
